Fall 2008 Trip

VIIDAI-21 was held in October 2008 and was yet again another successful trip to San Quintin. Over 100 students and faculty from UABC, SDSU, and UCSD, as well as numerous volunteers from the Del Mar and La Mesa Sunrise Rotary Clubs and non-profit organization Amigos de los Californios worked together over one weekend in San Quintin, Baja California. As in past VIIDAIs, many health services were provided to community members including medical exams, consultations, and dental work. Several public health projects started during recent VIIDAI trips were continued, including a parasite study among children and the Bixby reproductive health education program for both youth and adults. The cook responsible for providing meals to students at the elementary school reported that the Rotary-funded kitchen has greatly improved the school's ability to provide healthy meals to students at school.

10 Year Anniversary of VIIDAI
The Spring 2008 VIIDAI session marked the 10 year anniversary of this bi-national collaborative project. Activities conducted during the VIIDAI session included clinical services, psychology services, dental services, continuation of a parasitology project, initiation of a metabolic project, initial evaluation of the school's breakfast program, and expansion of the Bixby reproductive health project. All students and faculty in attendance during this special weekend were treated to a traditional Mexican fiesta and a concert to celebrate the event.

Rotary Kitchen Completed
The remodel of the school kitchen in the elementary school in San Quintin was completed during the Spring 2008 VIIDAI trip. The new kitchen updates include new, adequately sized appliances, food storage areas, and food preparation areas. The community showed their appreciation for Rotary's financial support of this project with a special dedication ceremony. Thanks to Rotary's generosity, students will now be able to enjoy nutritious meals prepared in the school kitchen for many years to come.

Fred H. Bixby Foundation Grant - 2008
The Fred H. Bixby Foundation has generously decided to continue funding the Bixby reproductive health program currently being implemented in San Quintin, Baja California. Through past support from the Bixby Foundation, this peer reproductive health education program was able to expand from working with students at one elementary school to include students from two nearby middle schools as well as adult community members. This new grant amount of over $580,000 will allow the Bixby education program to continue providing needed health education to students and adults of San Quintin. The very generous support of the Fred H. Bixby Foundation will ensure the continuing success of the entire VIIDAI collaboration for many years to come.

New Rotary Project

The Rotary Clubs decided to fund a new kitchen for the elementary school in San Quintin. New appliances and supplies in the kitchen will allow the school cooks to adequately prepare nutritious meals for the students of the school, who rely on the kitchen for up to two meals each day. The kitchen remodel should be completed in Spring 2008

Additional Fred H. Bixby Foundation Grant
In May 2007, VIIDAI was awarded a $92,900 grant by the Bixby Foundation. This award is being used to expand the current reproductive health education program in San Quintin. In the past this peer education program was implemented in one elementary school. The program has expanded to include teaching reproductive health in two nearby middle schools and into the community.

Rotary Donation
The Del Mar Rotary Club generously donated $10,000 to the VIIDAI project, which was utilized to purchase medical equipment and supplies for the biannual VIIDAI trip.
