Dr. Miguel A. Fraga, UABC - mfraga@viidai.com Dr. Miguel A. Fraga has studied the specialty of Family Medicine, Primary Health Care and graduated with honors in Teaching. He also has a Masters Degree in Nutrition. He has taken 5 academic courses in education and 2 in nutrition. He has been a professor in the School of Medicine of the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC) since 1986 in the areas of Public Health, Medical Sociology, Health Promotion, Introduction to Clinical Medicine and Methodology. He is currently a full professor in this institution and is the coordinator of Community Activities for the School of Medicine. He has spoken at more than 45 academic and/or scientific conferences and has participated in the organization of over 20 academic events (courses, symposiums, seminars, conferences) at a regional and bi-national level. He has won an academic recognition award for the last 5 bi-annual contests in the UABC; in the last three contests, he has received the highest level of academic quality. He has had a private medical practice since 1986 and has worked for the city of Tijuana government as Chief of Social Wellbeing from1989 to 1992. He currently has strong relations with government authorities for the city, the state of Baja California and the Indigenous Education System, with whom he has participated in coordinating community activities. He has published several educational articles in popular regional magazines. He currently develops community and research activities with the SDSU Graduate School of Public Health where he has an appointment as associate professor since July 2000. He is also part of a team of investigators from UCSD in the area of HIV prevention since 2000. He develops research activities in the area of Nutrition and Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Diseases for the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC). He is the founder and General Coordinator for the VIIDAI Project, which has been active since 1998 and includes a variety of inter-institutional activities like integration between institutions, education and community service and research, with the joint participation of UABC-SDSU-UCSD, as well as the government of the State of Baja California and non-government organizations.

Dr. Stephanie Brodine, SDSU - sbrodine@viidai.com Dr. Stephanie Brodine is Professor and Head of the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases with active research interests and expertise in Infectious Diseases Epidemiology, particularly in HIV and AIDS, International Health, and Health Disparities. She is active in U.S./Mexico border educational and research collaborations and has been the US Coordinator of VIIDAI since its inception in 1998. She is the Clinical Director of the DoD HIV/AIDS Prevention Program, which has HIV prevention and care activities in approximately 70 countries. Dr. Brodine is also the Program Director of the California NARCH (Native American Research Center for Health), in partnership with the Indian Health Council which is funded by the NIGMS and the Indian Health Service, with active research and student development projects (www.canarch.org). Dr. Brodine has over 75 publications and has research and program management funding from NIH, USAID, and US DoD. |
UABC established VIIDAI in 1981 by conducting a series of academic and research field trips to rural regions of Baja California and Sonora. John Elder, PhD, MPH is a Professor of Health Promotion at San Diego State University Graduate School of Public Health, and Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics at the University of California-San Diego. His research emphasis at SDSU has been on chronic disease prevention in the Latino community. He currently serves as Principal Investigator of two NIH funded research projects, namely the San Diego component of the Trial of Activity for Adolescent Girls, and Obesity Prevention in San Diego Recreation Centers. He is also the Principal Investigator for the San Diego Prevention Resource Center funded by the CDC and Co-Principal Investigator of the national Hispanic Community Health Study. He has authored 3 books and 280 other publications in the areas of health promotion, disease prevention, and behavioral epidemiology. Dr. Elder has consulted for USAID, Rockefeller Foundation and WHO projects in 31 different countries in Asia, the Americas and Europe. His international work has been in the areas of child survival, MCH, AIDS/HIV, dengue fever control, research design, and social marketing. In 2003, Dr. Elder was awarded the third Research Laureate presented by the American Academy of Health Behavior.

Dr. Ramona Pérez is a California-born Chicana anthropologist whose work focuses on the power and politics of Mexican and Mexican American communities in Oaxaca, Mexico and the United States. She is currently Associate Professor of Anthropology, Graduate Advisor of Anthropology and Associate Director of Latin American Studies at San Diego State University. Dr. Pérez received her B.A. from San Diego State University in 1992, her M.A. (1995) and her Ph.D. (1997) from the University of California, Riverside. Dr. Pérez publishes and lectures for both an academic and popular audience.

Richard Garfein, PhD ( rgarfein@ucsd.edu) Dr. Garfein is an Associate Professor in the Division of International Health and Cross-Cultural Medicine in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at UCSD. He was trained as an infectious disease epidemiologist at San Diego State University, School of Public Health where he received his M.P.H. degree, and at Johns Hopkins University, School of Hygiene and Public Health where he received his Ph.D. Prior to his appointment at UCSD, Dr. Garfein worked for over seven years at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, first as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer in the Division of Viral Hepatitis, and then as a Senior Staff Epidemiologist in the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention. For over the past 15 years he has been conducting research on behavioral transmission of bloodborne viral infections, including HIV, HBV, HCV, and HTLV I/II, among high-risk populations domestically and abroad. His international research and consulting activities include Mexico, Russia, Thailand, Japan, the Caribbean, Africa, and Kyrgykistan. Dr. Garfein joined the UCSD faculty in 2005 and is currently leading a study of tuberculosis among HIV infected and uninfected injection drug users in Tijuana, Mexico. His current research involves observational studies and behavioral intervention trials related to HIV, viral hepatitis, and tuberculosis prevention among injection drug users and other vulnerable populations.

D.R. Henderson, Ph.D. was involved in biotechnology. Dan was president & CEO of Arizeke and Kadmus, and President and founder of Calydon and Microgenics. Dan holds 26 patents in immunology, cancer therapeutics and drug delivery. He raised over $50 million in these efforts. |

Rotarian Bob James has brought Rotary to VIDAII in a big way. Five Southern California Clubs have now joined in support of VIDAII, and are currently working on a major grant to build a new kitchen to feed 325 kids, build a covered dining pavillion at the school, and completion of a new computer labratory. Bob is General Real Estate Appraiser in San Diego, and serves as an Advisor on SDSU's Community Advisory Board for he School of Public Health. |
